Hiking in the Spessart
Thanks to its unique location in the middle of the forest, the Wald Hotel Heppe offers an ideal starting point for extensive hiking tours. There is something for everyone, both for a short walk and a full-day hike. All tours start right on your doorstep! In the legendary forest around the Wald Hotel Heppe you will find mysterious clearings, sunny meadows, mighty oak forests and perhaps one or two traces of the Spessart robbers. We would be happy to recommend a route for your hike. Further down on this page we have put together the most common hiking tours for you. Tour 1:
Spessarträuberland circular route 1, from Heppe
Distance: 17 km, level of difficulty: medium The hike on the Spessarträuberland circular route 1 leads through remote forests, quiet valleys with meadows and to panoramic heights. A lean grassland with valuable fauna and flora is also walked through. Starting from the Waldhotel Heppe you hike to the Gößbachtal. After the Jöchebrunnen you leave the valley and hike towards Oberschnorrhof. The path leads along the slope and crosses a poor grassland until you reach the Oberschnorrhof. We continue on the forest road to Hofgut Hundsrück. You hike through the Hofgut, turn right after about 700 m and continue hiking to the Geishöhe with the permanently accessible Ludwig Keller observation tower. You reach the Geishöhe restaurant via the road, then continue left downhill along the Spessarträuberland-Rundweg 1, then turn right (geishöhstraße hairpin bend) and reach the Waldhotel “Heppe”, your starting point, via a gravel forest path.
Tour 2:
Keiler circular route from Maria-Stern-Platz
Distance: 16 km, level of difficulty: medium to difficult On the “Keiler-Rundweg” you walk past the bike course from Maria-Stern-Platz. We continue slightly uphill through beautiful Spessart forests to the Waldhotel Heppe. From there it goes slightly uphill towards Wildensee. At the Wildensee junction you hike over the Langenrain into the Gößbachtal. After the Jöchebrunnen you leave the valley and hike towards Oberschnorrhof. The path leads along the slope and crosses a poor grassland until you reach the Oberschnorrhof. From here you hike slightly downhill over the Ferschenmühle to the Jochenhöhe. From the Jochenhöhe you continue hiking over the Nonnenhöhe to the sports grounds of the Wintersbach game association (2 km) and to Maria-Stern-Platz, your starting point.
Tour 3a:
Old school route from Wald Hotel Heppe
Distance: 8 km, level of difficulty: medium to difficult From the Waldhotel Heppe, walk 100 m along the tar road to the wood storage area, turn left and walk along the Keilerweg to the municipal building yard (3 km). After about 50 m in the direction of Maria-Stern-Platz, turn left onto the cultural circular path and reach the Geishöhe via the “Alten Schulweg” after about 1 hour. Via the Spessarträuberland-Rundweg 1 you come to the Keilerrundweg and follow it to the left back to the Waldhotel “Heppe”, your starting point.
Tour 3b:
Old route to school from Maria-Stern-Platz
Distance: 8.5 km, level of difficulty: difficult Starting at Maria-Stern-Platz, you hike slightly uphill over the Müllerspfad, which offers you a wonderful panorama as you look down into the valley. We continue along the old school route, which was equipped with numerous adventure stations in memory of the Geishöhe children. In the past, the children had to walk the 4.5 km distance to school, regardless of wind and weather. As a reward, after a good hour's climb, the hikers reach the most populated point in the Spessart at 520 m above sea level, the Geishöhe. Take a short break at the Geishöhe inn and descend back into the valley via the Braunweg. Shortly before the Neuhammer we return along the Dammbach to the starting point at Maria-Stern-Platz.
Tour 4:
Circular route “Around the Heppe”
Distance: 3 km, level of difficulty: easy From the Waldhotel “Heppe” you walk along the “Lächerweg” and after approx. 1.3 km you reach the “Langer Rain” junction. Over the Hartberg and with a slight incline you come back to the Waldhotel Heppe after another 1.7 km. Connecting path to the “Eselsweg” Distance 2.5 km, difficulty level: medium to difficult From the Waldhotel “Heppe” the route leads along the Spessarträuberlandweg to Wildensee past the Waldfrieden inn to the Eselsweg.
Tour 5b:
The cultural circular route from Maria-Stern-Platz
Distance: 18 km, level of difficulty: medium to difficult South route 9 km: From Maria-Stern-Platz via the old school path you reach the Geishöhe with a steep climb. From the Geishöhe you hike along the Buchbrunnenweg to the Angelus Chapel on the Schnorrenhöhe. From the Schnorrenhöhe the route runs above the Dammbach on the Krautackerweg back to the starting point at Maria-Stern-Platz. Northern route 9 km: From Maria-Stern-Platz cross the main street, past the “Am Trieb” playground to Pollershöhe with the field walls, then continue to the Waldkapelle am Scharstein (3.5 km slight incline). From the forest chapel you go over the Ferschenmühle to the church of St. Wendelin (2.5 km slight incline). From the St. Wendelin church, walk above the Dammbach along the Krautackerweg back to the starting point at Maria-Stern-Platz (3 km).
Tour 5c:
The cultural circular route from St. Wendelin Church
Distance: 18 km, level of difficulty: medium to difficult Northern route 9 km: On the cultural circular route “between Scharstein and Geishöhe” you hike over the Ferschenmühle to the forest chapel on Scharstein and to Pollershöhe with the field walls. Then continue to Maria-Stern-Platz and along Krautackerweg back to St. Wendelin Church. Southern route 9 km: On the cultural circular route you first hike over the Schnorrenhöhe to the Geishöhe and then continue along the Schulweg to Maria-Stern-Platz and reach your starting point in St. Wendelin via the Krautackerweg above the Dammbachtal.
Tour 6:
Circular route around the Geishöhe
Distance: 3.5 km, level of difficulty: easy The starting point is the Geishöhe car park. The Butterfly Trail takes you along the edge of the forest along mostly flat field paths around the Geishöhe.
Tour 7a:
“Hase” circular route from Maria-Stern-Platz
Distance: 6 km, level of difficulty: easy The small Dammbach circuit marked “Hase” begins at Maria-Stern-Platz. You then cross the main street, continue on to the Wintersbach game association sports field and follow the “Hase” sign to the Rexroth cemetery (Höll hammer), then on to Neuhammer. Then, after about 1.5 km, you will reach the municipal building yard and the starting point at Maria-Stern-Platz via Spessartweg 2.
Tour 7b:
“Hase” circular route from Neuhammer
Distance: 6 km, level of difficulty: easy The starting point of the small Dammbach circuit with the marking is the bus parking lot at Neuhammer. You can reach the municipal building yard via Spessartweg 2 after approx. 1.5 km. From the construction yard, walk past Maria-Stern-Platz, cross the main street, continue to the Wintersbach game association sports field and follow the markings to the Rexroth cemetery and the Neuhammer starting point.
Tour 8:
“Fuchs” circular route from Maria-Stern-Platz
Distance: 6 km, level of difficulty: easy The hike to the Waldkapelle am Scharstein begins at Maria-Stern-Platz. You cross the main street and first walk to the sports field of the Wintersbach game association. Via the new development area “Im Störmersgut” to Nonnenhöhe you come to the Waldkapelle am Scharstein (medium gradient). You can return to the starting point via the Fahrendelle and the Mariengrotte in the Wintersbachtal - either via the Dammbacher Kreuzweg (6 km) or via the path marked over the cross on the Platte (7 km) with a beautiful view of the Dammbachtal.
Tour 12:
The Spessartweg 2
Distance: approx. 53 km, level of difficulty: difficult The Spessartweg 2 leads from Heigenbrücken to Stadtprozelten and crosses the municipality of Dammbach from Neuhammer over the Geishöhe to Wildensee. From the Gasthaus Auerhahn bus station, Spessartweg 2 leads along the slope to the beginning of Wintersbach and further in a side valley of the Dammbachtal to the “Alten Schulweg”. This leads upwards in a forest aisle with many windings. After crossing a street, turn right to the Geis höhe inn and continue along a street to the Ludwig Keller observation tower. A road takes you to the edge of the forest and continues to the right, past the Wildenthal forester's lodge, down to Wildensee.

Warum der Spessart einen Wanderurlaub 2026 wert ist
Der Spessart ist eines der größten zusammenhängenden Waldgebiete Deutschlands und erstreckt sich über die Grenze zwischen Bayern und Hessen. Die meisten Menschen fahren auf der A3 einfach durch – ohne einen zweiten Blick. Das ist ihr Verlust.
Wer die Autobahn hinter sich lässt und in den Wald eintaucht, erlebt, wie alles langsamer wird. Uralte Eichen- und Buchenwälder. Stille Täler. Sandsteinpfade, die sich durch kiefernduftende Luft den Hang hinaufwinden. Vogelgesang, der die Stille füllt, wo früher Straßenlärm war
Für einen Wanderurlaub in zwei bis drei Stunden Entfernung von Frankfurt, Würzburg oder Nürnberg ist der Spessart kaum zu übertreffen. Und 2026 erkennen immer mehr Menschen, dass ein paar Tage in diesem Wald mehr für den Geist tun als eine Woche an einem überfüllten Strand.
Ausgangspunkt: Wald Hotel Heppe in Dammbach
Die meisten Wanderurlaube folgen demselben Muster: zum Ausgangspunkt fahren, wandern, zurückfahren. Im Waldhotel Heppe beginnt der Weg direkt an der Haustür.
Das Hotel liegt in Dammbach, mitten im Spessart, mit Wald auf allen Seiten. Ihr steht auf, frühstückt und geht direkt in die Bäume. Kein Auto. Keine große Planung. Einfach Wald.
Diese Unkompliziertheit macht das Waldhotel Heppe zu einer so natürlichen Basis für einen Wanderaufenthalt. Die Wege rund um Dammbach und den weiteren Spessart passen zu jedem Wandertyp. Egal ob ihr eine entspannte Morgenrunde vor dem Mittagessen sucht oder einen langen Tag auf dem Kamm – es gibt eine Route, die passt.
Kurze Spaziergänge für Familien und Einsteiger
Der Wald direkt rund ums Hotel eignet sich ideal für kürzere Ausflüge. Schattige Pfade schlängeln sich durch Mischwald – sanft genug für Kinder und Hunde, aber abwechslungsreich genug, dass es nie nach einer bloßen Beinübung wirkt.
Eine typische kurze Runde ab Dammbach führt durch das Tal, an kleinen Lichtungen vorbei und zurück ins Dorf – in ein bis zwei Stunden. Der Untergrund ist meist weich, mit nur mäßigen Höhenunterschieden.
Mit Kindern oder Hund unterwegs? Diese Touren eignen sich gut als Morgenaufwärmer vor Pool und Mittagessen. Das Hotel ist haustierfreundlich und bietet Familienpakete an – damit alle dabei sein können.

Der Aufstieg führt durch dichten Buchenwald – ruhig und kühl selbst in der Hochsommerhitze. Oben lichten sich die Bäume, und man bekommt ein echtes Gefühl dafür, wie weit und unberührt diese Landschaft ist.
Vom Kamm aus lässt sich über Nachbardörfer zurückschlendern oder auf dem gleichen Weg zurückkehren. So oder so ist man rechtzeitig zum späten Mittagessen auf der Terrasse zurück.

Ganztagestouren für ambitionierte Wanderer
Der Spessart bietet Fernwanderwege, die einen ganzen Tag auf den Beinen lohnen. Der Spessartbogen – ein markierter Rundweg durch das Herzstück der Region – führt durch Landschaften, die trotz der Nähe zu Großstädten echte Abgeschiedenheit vermitteln.
Tagesetappen ab Dammbach umfassen je nach Route 15 bis 22 Kilometer. Man bewegt sich durch Eichen- und Kiefernwälder, überquert kleine Bäche und passiert alte Sandsteinbrüche, die von der langen Geschichte der Region erzählen. Die Höhenunterschiede sind moderat statt dramatisch – was die Distanz machbar hält, ohne je langweilig zu werden
